Yarrow in the Mid-Atlantic: Lessons from a Resilient Perennial – Dee Hall Goodwin
Yarrow (Achillea spp.) is widely regarded as an adaptable, low-input perennial, yet its performance in Mid-Atlantic gardens depends heavily on site, soil, and plant selection. Using yarrow as a case study, this presentation explores how perennial plants respond to heat, drought, poor soils, and urban stress common in Zone 7 landscapes. Native and cultivated forms will be compared, along with their ecological and design value. Best practices for siting and maintenance will be discussed to improve longevity and garden performance, with special attention to yarrow’s role as a cut flower in sustainable floral design. Attendees will gain practical guidance for using resilient perennials effectively in Mid-Atlantic gardens and landscapes.
Plant Community: Gardens as Social Infrastructure – Chris Fehlhaber
Gardens shall no longer simply be destinations and places of escape; they will be the
places we live. Enriching dynamic gardens must become ubiquitous. They must move
beyond their fences and into our communities – accessible to everyone. Our world is a
garden; it’s time we cultivate it.
